Why Snail farming is better than Poultry, fishery, piggery and Ruminant Animal Production

With Nigerian population at exactly 210 million people with its occupants on just  28% of its total land mass and as its megacities are home to about 145 million people. protein consumption among its people still remains a very big challenge. An average Nigerian consumes less than 10 pounds or 4.5kg of protein per year unlike in the United States with a population of 322 million people where an average individual consumes more than 150 pounds or 68kg per year. No doubt Agriculture is a fantastic and fulfilling venture especially in both crop and livestock production but which its materialization is still very young or green. To meet the protein production target, alot of effort is pumped into piggery which is still pilfered by the Islamic religion that forbids its meat, cost of feeding the animal which is less challenging compared to that of ruminant animal and health rumor by medicals house, individuals and unacertained facts by health authourities about its cholesterol level which could trigger heart problems. It is no doubt that this has hampered the protein production targets, the same livestock that has served the larger Chinese population of 1.3billion effortlessly over the years without an hitch. The Nigerian livestock and protein market needs serious intervention with an all encompassing option to include its cultural, economic, cost advantage consideration so that all can afford quality protein per meal serving, In Singapore a kilo of cat-fish is #130 Nigerian Naira while in Nigeria, it is #500 per kilo on the average. It is in this light that snail farming is imminent as a Nigerian snail can live up to 15yrs and grow up to 25Kg in total weight and up to 70cm on ground length while a year old snail ready for harvest can reach a total of 20 centimeters. A Giant Nigerian snail can lay 300 to 500 eggs at once and it lays its repeatedly 3  times a year. You can do your maths, if start with #80 or #100 or #150 per an egg Layering and breeding stocks for 1,000 pieces of a free range snail farm. I believe you can tell for yourself your return if on harvest you sell at #150 or #200 per snail, even if you sell at #50 per snail, you can never run at a loss as you will always make profit. Nigerian snails are no doubt one of the biggest in the world as snails are concentrated in rainforest region, Central and West African Region, to include some part of Central and South American Deltan Regions. In Livestock production and agric generally, little do a lot of people know that some core areas have more comparative economic and cost advantage. Among the long list of  livestock breeding for protein, snail farming or Heliciculture stands out. In the cultural reception and quality of its meat to its cost of production and farm set up and out put and profits, its advantages are vast compare to, piggery, poultry farming, fish farming, ruminant animal and rodents breeding such as grasscutter, rabbit and the likes. Without much explanation or ambiguous details, you can start a snail on a commercial scale with as little as #20,000 naira to a maximum of #500,000 naira on a 5 Acres of Land or on 2 Hectares of Land. You don't have to worry about feeding unlike, fishery, poultry, piggery, ruminant, and rodents as they feed almost any kind of farm produce, fruits, leaves or plants or by products from food processing plants. More so, you need not worry much about the cost of vet or your livestock falling sick or the growth threatened if all due primary safety considerations are observed.
The market is readily available and competition in the business is still very low as its practice is yet to gain popularity. To partner with me or to set up your snail farm, you can reach me on watsapp or call me on +2349099176956. or www.greenharrisburg.blogspot.co.ke. Am Adewale Oladipupo
